An aircraft is a device that can rapidly convert large sums of money into smoke and noise. I have decided to build such a conversion device in my garage. My name is Samm Munn and this will be my web-based Log Book for building my first experimental airplane, the Zenith Aircraft CH-601XL Zodiac. Its registration number will be N929ZZ. The CH-601XL is a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) which means that it can carry only two persons, has a gross weight at or below 1320 pounds, has a maximum stall speed of 51 mph or less, has a maximum speed in level flight with maximum continuous power of 138 mph or less. There are seveal other requirements under the regulation for it to be considered as an LSA but they are not listed here. For more information on the Light Sport Aircraft or Sport Pilots, visit EAA Sport Pilot.
Zenith Zodiac CH-601XL One of things I like about the design of this aircraft is the visibility. The canopy on the Zodiac CH-601 is a bubble and provides excellent all-around visibility. For more information on the aircraft itself, visit the Zenith Aircraft Company. CORVAIR EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ENGINE Although there are several choices for engines, I chose to convert a Chevrolet Corvair engine to an experimental aircraft engine. I did a considerable amount of research into engine choices and decided that the reliability combined with the initial, operating, and overhaul cost of the Corvair could not be beaten. For more information on the Corvair aircraft engine visit The Corvair Authoirty. ![]() THREE-VIEW DRAWING OF THE AIRPALNE This
plane is being built from scratch using the plans I obtained from the Zenith Aircraft Company. As I work on each area of aircraft and
engine construction I will be listing them as links in the left
margin. As progress on construction continues, I will update
those links.
This log is primarily meant to record my building experience for later reference and to share it with other builders, like many of them are doing for me. For some of their logbooks, see the builder pages on the Zenith Aircraft webpage. |
